Northern Beaches Council will commence construction next week on the highly anticipated upgrade of the Long Reef boardwalk and bridge, a key section of the popular coastal walk located between Long Reef Golf Course and Long Reef Beach.
This essential upgrade involves replacing the ageing timber boardwalk and bridge with a robust, low-maintenance environmentally sensitive structure designed to withstand coastal conditions. It will be relocated slightly further inland to minimise the impacts of storm surges on the structure.
Mayor Sue Heins welcomed the start of works, highlighting the importance of the project for both locals and visitors. “Long Reef Headland is one of our most loved coastal walks, and this upgrade will ensure it remains safe, accessible and enjoyable for generations to come.
The project follows extensive community consultation with the design and location based on environmental assessments and Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment.
Construction is expected to be completed by late 2025, weather permitting. The works will involve minor changes to two tees and a pathway on the Long Reef Golf Course, with the Club supportive of the current design.
“We’ve listened to the community and worked closely with stakeholders to design a solution that protects the environment, respects cultural heritage and enhances the experience for everyone who uses this beautiful stretch of coastline.”
“This project is a great example of Council investing in infrastructure that supports active lifestyles and connects people with nature,” Mayor Heins said.
The project is supported by a $500,000 NSW Government grant and forms part of Council’s broader commitment to improving open spaces and recreational infrastructure across the Northern Beaches.
Small detours will be in place while works are underway, but the coastal walking loop will stay open. For more information and to follow project updates, visit Your Say Northern Beaches.
