Northern Beaches Council is upgrading our much-loved play spaces at Freshwater Beach, with works commencing shortly on both the main accessible playground and the small playground at the southern end.

While the playground at the southern end of the beach is smaller and budget constraints has seen a change to the original plans, the new build will still be an enhancement especially designed to cater to our youngest residents. The new build will include a double slide, climbing structure tailored for toddlers, a larger state-of-the-art swing set with standard, toddler and basket seats, a dune buggy spring rocker, and fresh synthetic grass safety surfacing. The playground and its connecting path will also be slightly repositioned to further improve accessibility and enjoyment for families.

Mayor Sue Heins said, “We know how important these spaces are for our local families especially our littlest ones. The new small playground will provide a fantastic, safe environment for children to play, explore and make memories. We’re investing in our community’s future and ensuring every child can enjoy the outdoors, no matter their age or ability.”

The upgrade to the main accessible playground is also progressing, with the contractor having addressed recent equipment failures. The works include reinstating popular features such as Monkey Bars, Somersault Bars, and nature play climber elements, complemented by new surface finishes to further enhance safety.

To facilitate these improvements, the main accessible playground will be closed from 10 November for approximately four weeks, with the new small playground closed from 4 November. Both projects had been scheduled for earlier in the year, but unforeseen delays caused by supply and contractor availability, alongside persistent wet weather, meant work had to be postponed.

Mayor Heins added, “We appreciate the patience of our community while these essential works are carried out. Our priority is to deliver vibrant, safe, and accessible play spaces for everyone to enjoy. We’re excited to see both playgrounds open before Christmas, ready for children and families to enjoy over the summer holidays.”
