After a two-year hiatus, this year’s Remembrance Day will be extra special with locals being able to gather, participate and honour our service personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country.
Remembrance Day commemorates the Armistice which formally concluded hostilities in World War I, the ceasefire taking effect at 11am, on 11 November 1918 after more than four years of continuous warfare.
This year, Council is hosting two services that will take place at Manly War Memorial, The Corso (in front of Manly Town Hall), and at Manly Dam, on Friday 11 November, commencing at 10.45am.
Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said Remembrance Day is a very special occasion for many within our local community.
“Remembrance Day is one of the most important days on our commemorative calendar. It's a day when we acknowledge those who died while serving in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations around the world, particularly those who died or suffered for Australia.
“All members of the community are invited to attend, and there is an opportunity for the general public to lay private tributes.
“I urge everyone to take a minute out of your day and as an act of solidarity, pay your respects to those who died fighting while protecting our nation.” Mayor Regan said.
Remembrance Day Services
Where: Manly Dam War Memorial (King Street, Manly Vale) and Manly War Memorial, on The Corso (in front of Manly Town Hall)
When: Friday, 11 November, arrive at 10.30am for a 10.45am start
All welcome.
Parking is available at Manly Dam, and parking for The Corso service is at Whistler Street carpark or surrounding streets.
As part of the commemorative services, local school children from Manly Vale Public School, St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School, Balgowlah North Public School, and Balgowlah Boys will be involved in the proceedings at both locations.
At Manly Dam, Allegro vocalist David Cosentino will be led by Pittwater House Concert Band to play a hymn, and the Australian anthem while the Last Post will be played by Bugler Vaughan Price.
The catafalque party will be provided by Pittwater House Cadets and the service conducted by the Manly Warringah War Memorial Park Remembrance Trust.
While at The Corso, Piper Robert Pearce will play for the crowd alongside vocalist Cairyn Jay and Bulgar David Watts.
The catafalque party will be from HMAS Kuttabul and the master of ceremonies is Colonel Matt Stevens.
