Northern Beaches Council has resolved to introduce measures to better protect pedestrians in central Manly.

Mayor Regan said Council had been successful in securing a $400,000 grant from the federal government which will partially fund the safety measures and Council will match this funding with an additional $400,000.

“Safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority,” Mayor Regan said.

“It’s never nice to think that our public safety could be an issue and it’s unlikely it will, but it’s important we have done everything we can to mitigate the risk, in Manly and then other locations if identified down the track.

“We have been working closely with the Northern Beaches Police Area Command to develop a strategy to protect pedestrians in key sites in the Manly Central Business District.

“Measures are implemented for major events now, however there are things we can do to improve pedestrian safety every day.”

Mayor Regan said any permanent protection measures would be designed to be effective but also as unobtrusive as possible.

“Strategically located planter boxes and planting of mature trees are measures that can provide safety for pedestrians but also improve the visual amenity and provide more shade.

“We look forward to working with local businesses as well as the Manly Chamber of Commerce on this project.”
