Northern Beaches Council will undertake important repairs over the next 3 months to the much-loved Mona Vale and Whale Beach rockpools to have them ready in time for summer.
With origins dating back to the 1930s Depression-era relief projects, these pools are renowned for their unique locations and deep connections to the local community.
Mayor Sue Heins said the upcoming works will ensure these treasured pools remain safe and accessible for many years to come. “Our ocean pools are a special part of life on the Northern Beaches, bringing people together and providing a place to swim, cool off and connect,”
Works will include repairing cracks, replacing pool access stairs and handrails, improving access, replacing sections of coping, rebuilding scuppers and general repairs. These improvements are essential for the structural integrity, water quality, user comfort, and safety of the pools.
“The works at Mona Vale and Whale Beach rockpools reflect our ongoing commitment to maintaining and enhancing these important community facilities so that they can continue to be enjoyed by future generations,” Mayor Heins added.
Both pools will be closed while the renovation works are carried out from September to November 2025. Weather permitting.
Sydney’s Northern Beaches boasts 15 ocean rockpools, many of which have been providing safe swimming for between 50 and 100 years. As these beloved pools are exposed to challenging coastal conditions, ongoing investment and regular maintenance are vital to their preservation.
