The Curl Curl Creative Space is bringing in the New Year with a fresh lineup of exhibitions, workshops, talks, and live music by emerging and established artists from across a diverse spectrum of art forms.
Nestled amongst a leafy eco-garden, the purpose-built former scout hall is a unique indoor/outdoor facility established in 2014, featuring a gallery for exhibitions and four artist studios for long-term hire.
Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said the facility provides access to inspirational experiences by nurturing local creativity and culture and creating community.
“The Creative Space is not just a venue; it's a melting pot of ideas and expression. The line-up of events is a testament of the power of art to bring people together and spark meaningful conversations.
“I am thrilled by the vibrant lineup – there is something for everyone to enjoy and be inspired by,” Mayor Heins said.
Program highlights include:
31 January – 3 February: Old City to the Northern Beaches Dutch artist Robertus Kool has travelled the world for 35 years sketching the people and places he encountered in his role with the United Nations. When he found his assignments had become permanent, he bought an apartment in Jerusalem where he set up a studio and has painted ever since, exploring the bustling daily scenes of Jerusalem, depicted over time. Join Robertus for refreshments and hear his fascinating story in a free artist talk on Thursday 1 February (4 pm – 9 pm). Booking required.
28 February – 3 March: As Beautiful as a Bullet by resident artist Charlotte Bourilly pays homage to French new wave rock band Taxi Girl in her solo exhibition. The exhibition explores forgotten female bushrangers perpetuated by the myth of Ned Kelly, understood from different perspectives. Wild, excessive, disturbing, and beautiful, these women refused to be labelled and identified with a binary system or to align themselves with sexualised stereotypes. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of events featuring space jazz, groove-based improv, and post-future beats performed live by Cone of Confusion, Almost Toast, and DJ Makeda. 7 – 17 March: Luminosity of Spirit, a solo exhibition by award-winning contemporary artist Catriona Pollard's looks at connections to nature using woven sculpture to access the visceral and organic landscapes of spirit within nature. Using foraged vines and recycled metal wire, Catriona references the ancient basketry technique of looping to create contemporary sculptural works that have been profiled nationally in public and private collections across Australia. The exhibition will be accompanied by a workshop by the expert weaver to learn the ancient art of looping and create a basket to take home (no basketry experience required). 20– 31 March: Northern Beaches Gallery presents Stunning, a showcase of works by 30 Northern Beaches artists exploring the natural beauty of their surroundings. Influenced by its access to spectacular ocean environments and abundance of natural beauty, the Northern Beaches’ reputation as a centre for creativity is growing.
