Northern Beaches Council is proud to announce the naming of Panucci Field at John Fisher Park, North Curl Curl.
Formerly known as Old Reub Hudson Oval, Panucci Field recognises Francesco Panucci who in the 1940s purchased land on which this field is located to establish a market garden producing vegetables, flowers, herbs, fruits and raised small livestock.
Council acquired the land in the 1970 which then became part of the Reub Hudson Sporting Complex at John Fisher Park.
Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said the naming of the reserve was well deserved.
“Renaming the oval to Panucci Field is a fitting tribute to Francesco Panucci's significant contributions to our community.
“Francesco is fondly remembered for his philanthropy and dedication to the community including sponsoring other Italian families to experience the life in Australia.
“This sponsorship, common among Italian and Chinese communities in Curl Curl, Brookvale and Dee Why, contributed greatly to the multicultural and social history on the Northern Beaches.
“His legacy of hard work, generosity, and community spirit continues to inspire us all. We are proud to honour his memory in this way," said Mayor Heins.
Francesco Panucci background
Francesco Panucci migrated to Australia in 1927 from his hometown of Mongiana in Calabria, Southern Italy, seeking a better life for himself and his family.
Following World War II, Francesco sponsored many families from southern Italy, providing them with accommodation, food, friendship and support. He was instrumental in helping new immigrants integrate into the Australian way of life.
An official naming ceremony was held at the location with family members in attendance on 22 July 2025.
Old Reub Hudson Oval, now Panucci Field, is not to be confused with the adjoining Reub Hudson Oval which remains unchanged.
