Regarded as one of the most brilliant contemporary classics of our time, Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker is now playing at Glen Street Theatre from 28 February – 3 March.

This gripping psychological drama from the master of absurdism deals with identity, power and family ties.

Actor and Co-Director Nicholas Papademetriou said it remains as powerful today as it did 60 years ago after its premiere.

Throwing Shade Theatre Company (Metamorphosis, Vincent River) in association with theatrongroup (Anna in the Tropics, Greek Tragedy, Belvoir Downstairs, and The Importance of Being Earnest, Darlinghurst Theatre) brings this contemporary classic to life with a striking set.

The production stars Alex Bryant-Smith as Mick, Sydney Theatre Award-winning Yalin Ozucelik as Aston, and Nicholas Papademetriou as Davies.

The Caretaker is regarded as Harold Pinter’s break out play premiering in London in 1960 where it played for 18 months and was later adapted for film.

Synopsis:
Aston lives in a junk filled room in personal and emotional isolation, tinkering with gadgets and dreaming of building a shed out in the yard. His brother, Mick, inhabits his own world of aspirations but is held back by having to care for his vulnerable brother. It is winter. Into this derelict household Aston gives shelter to Davies - a tramp he has rescued off the street - who has his own dreams and delusions. A battle of wits begins in the brutal world into which all three are thrown, as each tries to manipulate the situation to achieve their respective ends. As the play unfolds, so does the mystery of how the lives of these three men will forever be changed.
