A big shout out to volunteers who turned out in force to take part in the community tree planting day at Curl Curl dunes last Saturday.
Over 60 locals - of all ages - joined the effort in helping plant over 2,000 native species amongst the dunes across the day. Volunteers were also joined by a handful of surfers and swimmers when a sighting of a Great White Shark set off the shark alarm and temporarily shut the beach!
Not only will the trees help protect the dunes from erosion, but as they grow will provide vital tree canopy to keep beachgoers more shaded and cooler in this popular spot.
The planting is part of the Coastal and Estuary Grants Program, a joint Council and NSW Government project to replace dense areas of uncontrolled weeds around Sydney, with Council’s focus over recent years being replacing weeds with natives through the very popular Curl Curl dunes.
Conditions were ideal with rain falling over the weekend to bed in the plants.
If you missed out, drop by and see how our volunteers did. Or better yet, make a date for our next planting event on National Tree Day 2025 on Sunday 27 July at Freshwater Beach. Details are on our website.
