Swimmers from Manly’s Diamond Squad have recently returned from the Australian Open Championships in Brisbane celebrating 9th place on the national points table up from 35th last year.
The 14-strong team - Josh Kerr, Harrison Rothwell, Gabe Gorgas, Luke Bibby, Callyn Fenwick-Kearns, Adam Graham, Logan Kaye, Bella Zhang, Lexi Harrison, Kya Furlong, Dom Kralka, Lexi Furlong, Eric Scott and Alex Murray - converted outstanding preparation into a long list of personal bests, 35 finals places and a trophy cabinet of team and individual medals.
Swimmers – who compete on behalf of Manly Swim club, based at the Centre – were part of one of the largest teams at the Aussies. The program - headed up by Coach Justin Rothwell - is one of the few fully fledged Open programs representing NS - showcasing the developing skills of the senior ranks of swimmers.
Performance highlights include 5 medals from 18-year-old Adam Graham, Bella Zhang’s 2 breaststroke victories and the team’s strength in the relays, reaching finals in all team events.
The Manly athletes supported each other throughout the meet organising marshalling and leading cheering in the grandstand creating a disciplined and positive pool presence.
Swimmers returned to their home pool this week to resume training ahead of the World Championship Trials in June. The coaching team is incorporating the 'Dual Peaking System' used by the USA Swimming team as part of their Olympic preparations.
