Teen Entrepreneur William Harkin Turns a Frightening Experience Into a Business Helping Keep Dogs Safe

After his own dog Indie went missing at Freshwater Beach, the Northern Beaches teen created Pawfetchers, a growing business providing waterproof AirTag holders for adventurous dogs and peace of mind for their owners.

A scary moment sparks an idea

For William Harkin, the inspiration behind Pawfetchers came from one of the most stressful moments he's experienced as a dog owner.

While visiting Freshwater Beach with his dog Indie, she suddenly took off after another dog and disappeared from sight.

"Those few minutes felt like hours," William recalls.

Although Indie was found safe, the experience highlighted how quickly a dog can go missing and the importance of being prepared if it happens.

When William started looking for a waterproof AirTag holder that could withstand beach trips, swimming and rough play, he struggled to find one he trusted. Rather than settling for an option that didn't meet his expectations, he decided to create a better solution himself.

Starting young and learning along the way

William launched Pawfetchers at just 15 years old.

With no previous business experience, he taught himself everything from website development and marketing to packaging design and supplier management. He spent months researching products, building supplier relationships and learning the fundamentals of running a business.

Now 16, William continues to balance school, family, friends and sport while growing the business.

Helping dog owners stay connected

Pawfetchers specialises in premium waterproof AirTag holders that securely attach to a dog's collar, protecting AirTags from water, mud and everyday adventures.

The goal is simple: to give dog owners greater peace of mind.

"Every decision starts with one question: Would I trust this on my own dog?" says William.

Created from personal experience, the product is designed to be durable, waterproof and reliable, helping owners locate their dogs if they wander off.

Growing through community

Much of Pawfetchers' growth has come through word of mouth, Facebook community groups and genuine connections with dog owners.

William believes authenticity has been one of the business's greatest strengths.

"People connect with real experiences and genuine stories," he says.

Customers regularly share positive feedback about the confidence they feel knowing their dog's AirTag is securely protected during walks, beach visits and outdoor adventures.

Building confidence through challenges

Like many business owners, William has faced challenges along the way, particularly while learning every aspect of running a business at a young age.

Rather than seeing setbacks as failures, he views them as opportunities to learn and improve.

"Running a business has taught me that you don't need to have everything figured out straight away. You just need to be willing to learn, adapt and keep improving."

Receiving positive customer feedback and seeing repeat customers return have been some of the biggest confidence boosts since launching the business.

The Northern Beaches connection

As a local business owner, William enjoys being part of the Northern Beaches community and frequently takes Indie to Harbord Park, one of their favourite local spots.

He believes supporting local and young businesses is important because behind every business is someone who has taken a risk to pursue an idea.

"Small businesses are built on relationships, trust and passion. Community support makes a huge difference."

Looking ahead

William's goal is to continue growing Pawfetchers into a trusted brand for dog owners across Australia.

He hopes to expand the product range in the future while continuing to focus on practical products that help keep dogs safe and owners feeling confident on every adventure.
