How innovator Brad Younger is reaching for the stars from Brookvale with Sunburnt Space Co.
Tucked away in Brookvale’s industrial pocket, Sunburnt Space Co. is doing something extraordinary — building rockets with the aim of launching into space. Founder and rocket enthusiast, Brad Younger, is on a mission to put Australian-built rockets into orbit, starting with Meggs Jr, their first prototype aiming to break the Kármán line — the edge of space.
The journey began with a hobby rocket that earned Brad the highest certification in amateur rocketry. “That success made me realise — if we take what’s working globally and simplify it, we could do something big here in Australia,” he says.
From passion project to bold venture
The idea of rocket-building sparked at 17, and it never left. After years running other businesses, Brad decided it was time to follow his lifelong passion. But turning a dream into a space-tech startup hasn’t been without its hurdles.
“One of the toughest early challenges was getting the engine to fire reliably. It took countless tweaks, but we got there,” he says. “Looking back, I wish I’d brought more people in sooner. Sharing the vision made a huge difference.”
Finding a niche in space
Instead of competing with global giants, Sunburnt Space carved out a niche — building fast, efficient rockets using a simple, local approach. Connections with universities and industry supporters helped open doors. “Showing up, being honest, and sharing our mission has helped build trust. Whether it’s a big event or a backyard BBQ — every conversation counts.”
The next big milestone? “We’re preparing for our first major test launch — it’ll be a big step toward reaching the Kármán line.”
Make it real
Their approach to communication is just as grounded: “Forget polished PR. Raw videos, behind-the-scenes photos, and explaining why we’re doing this gets more traction every time.”
Brad says the support from other locals has been key. “The support from other local businesses has been great — even just having people ask how things are going or share ideas. It makes you feel like you’re not doing it alone.”
Brad’s top tips for innovators
- Keep it simple
- Share the vision early
- Get started — don’t wait
- Show your “why”
- Be patient — momentum builds slowly
Space, but make it sustainable
Sunburnt Space is also focused on sustainability — starting with biofuels and designing greener manufacturing processes from day one. “We have a real opportunity to do this the right way from the start.”
Grounded by the Beaches
Despite reaching for the stars, Brad stays grounded by the local environment. “I love the balance here — building rockets in the morning, then walking through bush tracks in the afternoon. Even Brookvale Creek feels like an escape.”
For him, living and working on the Northern Beaches fuels creativity. “The energy here helps me stay grounded and dream big. Supporting each other — that’s what keeps this community strong.”
