Northern Beaches Council has temporarily closed Federation Point Walkway (or boardwalk) in Manly for structural investigations and repairs.

Council is mindful that this walkway is a popular route for walkers and will endeavour to manage repairs as quickly as possible to minimise disruption.

Council Deputy General Manager Ben Taylor said that the walkway, which Council leases from Roads and Maritime Services, is being temporarily closed in the interest of public safety.

"The Walkway connects Fairlight Walk (which runs parallel to Commonwealth Parade and to West Esplanade) with the Sydney Harbour side of Manly Pavilion and the Manly Sealife Sanctuary.

"Consultant engineers have advised that the Walkway needs timely repairs as two of the eight support struts to the structure have experienced significant deterioration and a further two are at risk of degenerating.

"The wooden struts need to be replaced as do the bolts and metal supports," Mr. Taylor said.

Materials are on order and repairs will be underway once they arrive.

An alternative route will be signposted. The Walkway will reopen once the essential repairs are complete; at this stage in early 2017.
