New smart street LED lights with sensors being installed

Bright, energy-efficient street lighting is important for safety, the community and the environment through lower energy consumption.

Council is one of 29 councils in NSW, working with Ausgrid, street lighting service provider to the councils, to deliver Australia’s largest and most advanced smart street lighting upgrade.

Ausgrid is installing the new smart streetlights on main roads, which will provide noticeably better quality light.

Over the next three to four months, more than 4200 streetlights will be replaced on main roads on the Northern Beaches with energy efficient LEDs and smart controls.

The smart controls are being added to the streetlights on main roads to help detect faults, optimise maintenance, measure energy use and facilitate off-peak dimming in the future. The lights will also be able to accommodate future smart city sensors.

The sensors have the capacity to deliver better traffic and pedestrian counts, monitor the climate, monitor for pollutants and detect high noise levels.

As a result of the upgrades, the total energy consumption of Ausgrid-managed street lights will fall significantly.
