"I am not used to studying the subject as I am always seen to be the subject. By participating in Our Race workshops I feel more confident to navigate this space and control my own narrative, and tell my story, my way."
This workshop is designed specifically for Story Holders (community members with lived, living experiences) who would like to share their story in a more empowered way. This workshop is open to anyone who has been asked to share their story or wants to share their story to create positive change in the community. Throughout the two-hour session you will be supported by Our Race Community co-founders Dung Tran and Doug Cronin to better understand the power of storytelling and how to advocate for more ethical storytelling practices for you and your community.
During this session, we will explore:
- Understanding your legal rights and identifying "extractors" or "interpreters"
- Working effectively with Story Caretakers while maintaining boundaries
- Practical ways to address power dynamics in the storytelling process
- Gaining insights from experienced Story Holders on navigating these spaces safely
- Creating Your Story
For adults aged 18 and over.
Sunday 14 June, 11.30am - 1.30pm with lunch provided afterwards.

Organisation and Facilitators
Our Race Community is a pioneering anti-racism storytelling charity that champions authentic narrative representation. We partner directly with individuals and communities affected by racial and social injustices, amplifying voices that have historically been marginalised. Through our work, we actively challenge racist structures and oppressive practices while advancing anti-racist principles that reshape the storytelling landscape and empower both Story Holders and their communities.
At the heart of our approach lies the Transformational Ethical Story Telling (T.E.S.T.) Framework, which upholds the fundamental rights and dignity of every individual, regardless of their background. We recognise storytelling as a catalyst for social change and advocacy, placing the well-being, agency, and safety of Story Holders at the forefront of our mission to create lasting social impact.
Dung Tran (she/her) is a lived experience anti-racism Story Telling mentor, educator and advocate and co-founder of Our Race Community. Growing up in Ipswich QLD during the 80s and 90s where she witnessed and experienced racism regularly instilled in Dung a strong sense of social and racial justice. Dung has used her lived experience as one of her greatest strengths as both a driver to fight for justice and to encourage others to value lived experience as the highest form of expertise. She demonstrates this through her work at Our Race adding to her over 25 years’ experience working with and for community across government, corporate and the not-for-profit sectors.
Doug Cronin (he/his) is an ethical storytelling educator and practitioner and co-founder of Our Race Community. After working in government and the community sectors and advocating for lived experience storytelling while studying a PhD, Doug found himself reaching a crossroads due to the common extractive storytelling processes and practices which were and are perpetuated through the legal and political systems. This led to Doug working with the Our Race team and community to work with experts across the legal, community and higher education sectors to co-create the Transformational Ethical Story Telling (T.E.S.T.) Framework, which acts as a tool for community-centred storytelling.
