What is an electric vehicle (EV)?

An electric vehicle (EV) is a car that uses energy stored in a rechargeable battery to power at least one electric motor, instead of relying solely on a petrol or diesel engine.

Types of EVs

There are two main types of EVs:

  • Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) which run entirely on electricity and produce zero emissions.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) which combine an electric motor with a petrol engine and can be charged externally.
  • Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) use a battery and motor but are not typically classed as full EVs, as they cannot be plugged in to charge.

Benefits of owning an EV

Electric vehicles offer significant benefits including lower fuel and running costs, a quieter and smoother driving experience, reduced air and noise pollution, and increased energy security, especially when charged with solar.

Incentives to help with cost

A Fringe Benefits Tax exemption applies to EVs purchased through a novated lease. To check this is still valid and for further information see the ATO.

Charging your EV

EVs can be charged at home using either a standard household power outlet (Level 1) or a dedicated fast charter (Level 2). Charging at home with solar or using off-peak electricity plans can further reduce running costs for an EV.

EVs can also be charged using public chargers.  The NSW Government electric vehicle charging map shows the location of public chargers.

Council supports opportunities for new public EV charging facilities, which is guided by the adopted EV Charging Infrastructure Plan. In 2026, we will be seeking interest from charge point operators to apply for dedicated public EV charging spaces.

Choosing the right EV

There are a wide variety of EV models, ranging from city hatchbacks to SUVs. When selecting an EV, consider your daily driving needs, typical range requirements, budget, charging access (home or public), and priorities such as safety or performance. It’s a good idea to test drive some EVs before purchasing one.

The Vehicle Emissions Star Rating website allows you to compare emissions, running costs and driving range for a variety of electric, hybrid and petrol vehicles.

5 steps to getting an EV

  • Step 1: Background reading
  • Step 2: Decide vehicle type and range
  • Step 3: Research public and home charging options
  • Step 4: Test drive
  • Step 5: Purchase and organise home EV charger installation if needed
