Stony Range Regional Botanical Garden, our little hidden pocket of paradise in Dee Why, turned 60 this week.

What was once a rock quarry, Stony Range Garden has been transformed into a 3.3-hectare tranquil oasis tucked away in a green pocket adjacent to the bustling intersection of Pittwater and Warringah roads.

It was opened as Stony Range Flora and Fauna Reserve on the 2nd September 1961, and then became a Botanic Garden of Australian Bushland in 2006.

The garden is jointly managed by Council and a Volunteer Advisory Committee. A small army of dedicated volunteers (pictured in pre-COVID times) maintain and care for the garden, creating a peaceful bushland retreat in an otherwise busy industrial area.

It's free and open every day of the year! It's the perfect place to take a little COVID safe stroll and recharge your batteries.

We recently received this lovely handwritten letter which shows just how precious this garden is to those who visit:

Dear Stony Range

I wanted to write to tell you how much I appreciate having this beautiful place nearby. Do not underestimate the enormous value you bring to local residents.

I live in an apartment by myself and I suffer from anxiety. It has been tough for the past few months but having this wonderful place where I can enjoy nature has really helped me through.

I step through your gates and immediately feel a sense of tranquillity.

Thank you so much.

Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers who have helped maintain and care for the garden over the years.
