Spring brings the perfect ‘Goldilocks zone’ for cycling – not too cold, not too hot, but just right for getting out on a bike.

If you’re one of the enthused bicycle riders out and about enjoying the Beaches on two wheels, it’s the perfect time to refresh your knowledge around road rules for cyclists, to help keep everyone safely moving about.

Top tips for all riders (whatever bike you’re riding!)

  • Dismount at pedestrian and children’s crossings – unless there are bicycle crossing lights or a continuous bike path.
  • Give way to pedestrians – on the road, shared paths and crossings.
  • Always give a hand signal when turning or merging to the right, and it’s recommended that you also signal when turning left or stopping.
  • Always keep to your left when facing oncoming pedestrians or other cyclists.

Of course, don’t forget the obvious:

  • wear a proper helmet
  • using lights
  • using a bell
  • staying alert around vulnerable people and animals, especially dogs.
