Council has appointed Business Green Energy as the aggregator/broker for a 100% renewable electricity group Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for Northern Beaches businesses to tackle rising energy costs and carbon emissions.

A renewable electricity PPA is a contractual agreement between energy buyers and sellers which will directly benefit participating local businesses by reducing their carbon emissions, scaling up their buying power while cutting complexity and costs to generate real savings on electricity bills.

Organisations are facing record volatility in energy costs, so now is the perfect time to learn how a renewable energy PPA can reduce electricity price risk, and help organisations meet sustainability targets. A recent webinar held for Northern Beaches and North Shore businesses was well attended with more than 40 organisations tuning in, with a second webinar planned for mid-May.

With 32,700 businesses across the peninsula and non-residential emissions accounting for around 37% of the Northern Beaches community carbon emissions (more than 70% from electricity) this is a great opportunity for organisations to reduce electricity bills and carbon emissions.

While businesses with high electricity usage (over 100MWh/year, or approximate energy spend greater than $32,000) are most suitable, we encourage smaller businesses to also consider registering their interest

Council’s own Power Purchase Agreement is currently with Iberdrola, which owns the Bodangora Wind Farm in regional NSW where our offsets are sourced.

Since 2017 the Northern Beaches community have been taking action and have reduced their carbon emissions per person by around 5%. This steps us closer to our target for net zero emissions by 2050, as outlined in our adopted Environment and Climate Change. This project will help us to reduce emissions further and support the uptake of renewable energy.
