Thank you to all the Dee Why and Cromer residents involved in the first phase of the food waste collection pilot.
These 1,700 households have been adding their food waste to their garden waste bin for months so we can learn from their experiences as we design a service for the whole Northern Beaches area.
The NSW Government requires all councils to provide a food waste collection service by 2030.
During this first phase around 330 tonnes of food and garden waste was collected and sent for recycling and made into compost for agriculture and other uses.
Phase 2 of the pilot program starts in April with around 1,200 selected households across Terrey Hills, Fairlight and Manly Vale to take part in the 5-month pilot. If you are unsure whether you are in the pilot area, you can check the map.
Phase 2 will introduce a separate burgundy bin exclusively for food waste. Residents in the pilot area have been notified, with bins, kitchen caddies, compostable liners and information set to arrive the week before the pilot begins.
Council teams will assess resident participation, contamination levels, waste audits and supplier feedback to determine how the system performs across different housing types, from large homes to granny flats and unit blocks.
The findings will help shape a long term, practical and environmentally responsible food waste service for the entire Northern Beaches community by 2030.
