This October, you can be part of Australia’s largest annual citizen-science event, the Aussie Bird Count.
Held during National Bird Week, the event runs from 20 to 26 October. To participate and become a fellow citizen scientist, all you need to do is head outside at anytime during this period for just 20 minutes to observe and count birds. Pretty easy right?!
To join and start counting birds, download the Aussie Bird Count mobile app or visit the website.
Then during the specified dates, head outside to your local reserve, beach, park, schoolyard, backyard or balcony and record which birds your see and hear.
Good luck and have fun! Hopefully you’ll spot some new species and learn about the incredible world of our local bird life too.
Why is the Aussie Bird Count so important?
Currently one in 6 Australian birds face the threat of extinction. So, by helping track local bird populations, you are helping build data and knowledge around trends in our bird communities. Birds are also great indicators of environmental health, so tracking their presence is vital for understanding the health of our local ecosystems.
The Aussie Bird Count is run by BirdLife Australia, Australia’s largest bird conservation and research charity focused on stopping extinctions of Australia’s birds.
