Northern Beaches’ War on Waste

The holidays are the ideal time to sort through your wardrobe and donate unused or unwanted clothing in good condition to charity, friends or family.

Australians throw away an astonishing 6,000kg of fashion and textile waste every 10 minutes, and with 85% of it ending up in landfill, we’re on a mission to help residents get on top of the war on waste.

Attend or tune in to one or more of our handy COVID-safe events:

  • Charity Clothing Drop-off Day – Sun 17 Jan, 9am – 3pm, Pittwater Rugby Park
    Make a difference and donate quality pre-loved clothing, accessories, manchester and small homewares at the Red Cross Charity Clothing Drop-off Day.
     
  • Bags to riches – Quarterly event, starting Sat 6 Mar, Walter Gors Park, Dee Why
    This fun flea market requires no marquees, tables or clothes racks.
     
  • Avalon Car Boot Sale – Quarterly event, starting Sat 13 Mar
     
  • Clothing Repair Café webinar – Mon 15 Mar, Online
    Learn how to repair your clothes including changing an elastic, hemming trousers, fixing a zip, mending a hole and re-buttoning a shirt.
     
  • Buy Sell online workshops – various dates
    Learn how to use sites such as Gumtree and Northern Beaches Facebook so you can easily sell or buy secondhand items.

  • Reuse calculator – this handy app from Charitable Recycling Australia calculates the impact of our clothes and other items on CO2 emissions into the environment, e.g. producing one book results in 1.6kg of CO2 emissions and needs one tree in a day to absorb the CO2, while producing one cotton T-shirt emits 8.10kg and requires four trees to absorb the CO2 over one day.
