Council is continuing its important crackdown on building sites to prevent pollution from going into Northern Beaches waterways.
In August, Council teams took part in the Get the Site Right campaign, working with NSW government agencies including the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and coastal environment groups.
As part of the campaign, 65 building sites across the Northern Beaches received surprise inspections to ensure adequate controls were in place to prevent pollution.
Only 64% of the building sites inspected were found to be compliant with adequate controls in place to prevent pollution and protect local waterways and the environment.
Issues were identified at 23 construction sites including uncovered stockpiles and waste materials, and sites missing controls such as sandbags. Council officers issued formal warnings to address these concerns.
During the previous campaign inspections in March, close to half of the building sites inspected were found to have pollution breaches.
The Get the Site Right campaign is run twice a year and focuses on preventing pollution incidents from building sites by promoting best-practice erosion, sediment and waste controls.
To report pollution incidents, community members can contact Council on 1300 434 434 or call the EPA’s Environment Line on 131 555.
