From a wedding gift idea to a global beach brand: How Basil Bangs reimagined the humble beach umbrella

A simple design challenge sparked a business built on creativity, quality and playing the long game.

From a simple idea to a growing brand

More than 15 years ago, a friend searching for the perfect beach umbrella as a wedding gift couldn’t find one that felt both stylish and well made. He brought the idea to Mike Durante and his wife Krista Huebner - and it quickly sparked something bigger.

They began exploring how to design a better beach umbrella, one that balanced thoughtful design with durability and function.

What started as a creative challenge soon revealed a clear gap in the market. Basil Bangs officially launched in 2009 with the ambitious goal of bringing premium, beautifully designed beach umbrellas back into the spotlight.

“We launched with the wild idea of bringing premium, beautiful beach umbrellas back into the collective consciousness.”

Design-led from the beginning

From the start, Basil Bangs has focused on design and quality.

Rather than sourcing generic products, everything is developed in-house. The brand was among the first to introduce premium beach umbrellas and picnic rugs designed to combine aesthetics with durability.

Collaborating with artists on exclusive designs has also helped shape the brand’s identity.

The range continues to evolve through customer feedback and real-world use, ensuring each product balances form and function.

“Nothing we do is off the shelf. Everything is designed by us with the goal of creating something beautiful that also works well in the real world.”

Growing through consistency and connection

Referrals and repeat customers have been central to Basil Bangs’ growth, reflecting the importance of quality and reliability.

Digital marketing, including paid social media and Google, continues to support reach, but genuine connection remains just as important.

“As technology continues to evolve, we believe that authentic and genuine connection with customers will be more important than ever.”

A strong focus on durability and thoughtful design has helped build long-term loyalty.

“If we are going to make something, we want it to last. There’s nothing worse than spending good money on something that breaks shortly after.”

The team continues to refine products based on how customers use them, whether at the beach, at home or travelling, while staying open to new tools and technologies as the ecommerce landscape evolves.

Challenges and lessons along the way

The early years required significant commitment, with the business built alongside other work and family life.

“The biggest challenge was simply the slog of those first few years.”

One of the most important lessons has been staying focused on what makes the business different.

“Know your numbers and be clear on what makes you different.”

Avoiding comparison and maintaining a steady, long-term approach has helped the brand continue to grow.

Life on the Northern Beaches

Based in Brookvale, Basil Bangs benefits from a unique mix of creative businesses, industrial trades and coastal lifestyle.

Working locally allows the team to collaborate with nearby suppliers while staying connected to the environment that inspires their products.

“I love the depth and diversity of Brookvale. You can visit a sandblaster or powder coater in the morning, an upholsterer in the afternoon, grab great coffee and still ride your bike to the beach for a swim.”

The area’s creative energy, from local makers to cafés and small businesses, contributes to the character of the neighbourhood.

“Local businesses give our area its soul.”

Looking ahead

Basil Bangs continues to evolve as the brand grows.

Plans for a larger space later this year will support the next stage of development, alongside work towards B Corp certification, a key milestone in strengthening its sustainability focus.
